How much it costs to ship a 10, 20, 50 or 70 lb package
Then quote the box you packed.
How much it costs to ship a 10, 20, 50 or 70 lb package is the carrier's published rate for its billable weight and zone, plus whatever fuel, home-delivery and size or weight surcharges that carrier adds. Published prices are a benchmark, so price the packed, measured box before you buy the label.
Your packed box, four carriers
A quote needs the real weight and the length, width and height. The box size goes to the carrier with every live quote, so the price reflects dimensional weight.

How much does it cost to ship a 10 lb package?
UPS and USPS facts, checked
At published prices checked , a 10 lb package costs $15.91 to $26.29 by UPS Ground and $12.91 to $26.39 by USPS Ground Advantage from zone 2 to zone 8, before surcharges. Zones measure distance from the origin ZIP code: zone 2 is close by and zone 8 is the farthest zone in the 48 states. Each row below is a billable weight, so a large, light box can pay a heavier row's price, and the rows under the 10 lb row show how both carriers' prices climb with weight.
| Billable weight | UPS Ground | USPS Ground Advantage | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zone 2 | Zone 5 | Zone 8 | Zone 2 | Zone 5 | Zone 8 | |
| 10 lb | $15.91 | $20.46 | $26.29 | $12.91 | $17.81 | $26.39 |
| 20 lb | $19.20 | $26.97 | $43.33 | $18.11 | $26.68 | $42.14 |
| 30 lb | $23.20 | $35.95 | $62.08 | $35.53 | $66.98 | $104.30 |
| 50 lb | $29.53 | $53.02 | $90.26 | $50.22 | $97.30 | $157.97 |
| 70 lbplus Additional Handling at UPS | $34.85 | $61.20 | $103.10 | $60.78 | $118.67 | $199.01 |
| 100 lbplus Additional Handling at UPS | $73.47 | $86.54 | $124.90 | Not accepted: USPS takes up to 70 lb | ||
| 150 lbplus the Large Package Surcharge at UPS | $119.44 | $133.37 | $179.64 | Not accepted: USPS takes up to 70 lb | ||
A box over 50 lb on the scale also pays UPS's Additional Handling fee, and a box over 110 lb pays the Large Package Surcharge instead. Both are in the table of added charges further down, with fuel and the residential surcharge.
Published prices checked on : UPS 2026 Daily Rate and Service Guide (updated September 7, 2026), UPS Ground rates on pages 89 to 92; UPS 2026 Daily Rates spreadsheet (the 30 lb UPS row); USPS Notice 123 (effective October 4, 2026). UPS figures are UPS Ground Daily Rates for the 48 states and USPS figures are Ground Advantage commercial prices, both before fuel, residential, delivery area and size or weight surcharges.
These are the carriers' published prices, a benchmark and not what a GoatLabels label costs. A label is priced from a live quote for your packed, measured box, so quote the box itself before you buy.
How much does it cost to ship a 20 lb box?
At published prices a 20 lb box costs a little over twice as much to zone 8 as to zone 2, by UPS Ground or by USPS Ground Advantage, before surcharges; the 20 lb row of the dated table has the amounts.
Past 20 lb the USPS Ground Advantage price climbs steeply, so by 30 lb UPS's published base rate is the lower of the two in every zone, before UPS's fuel and residential surcharges; UPS vs USPS for heavy packages explains the jump.
Neither carrier adds a weight fee at 20 lb, but the box can still raise the price, because carriers bill the greater of the actual weight and the dimensional weight: one 20 lb item can bill as 20, 42 or 58 lb depending on the box it ships in.
| Box holding 20 lb | Cubic inches | UPS dimensional weight | UPS bills | USPS Ground Advantage bills |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 x 12 x 12 in | 1,728 | 13 lb | 20 lb (the scale weight is higher) | 20 lb (not over 1 cubic foot, so no dimensional weight) |
| 18 x 18 x 18 in | 5,832 | 42 lb | 42 lb | 42 lb, plus the fee for parcels over 2 cubic feet |
| 20 x 20 x 20 in | 8,000 | 58 lb | 58 lb | 58 lb, plus the fee for parcels over 2 cubic feet |
Rules checked on : UPS 2026 Daily Rate and Service Guide (updated September 7, 2026); Federal Register 2026-09785 (USPS dimensional weight from July 12, 2026); USPS Notice 123 (effective October 4, 2026). UPS divides length x width x height by 139 on daily rates, after rounding each side up to the next inch, and rounds the result up to the next pound. USPS has used the same divisor since July 12, 2026, but only for parcels over 1 cubic foot. None of these three boxes triggers a UPS size surcharge. More boxes, worked out the same way, are in UPS billable weight examples.
How much does it cost to ship a 50 lb box?
At published prices a 50 lb box costs about three times as much to zone 8 as to zone 2, by UPS Ground or by USPS Ground Advantage, and it is the heaviest box UPS prices without its Additional Handling fee for weight; the 50 lb row of the dated table has the amounts.
Any box over 50 lb on the scale pays that fee on top of its rate, so a 51 lb box costs far more at UPS than a 50 lb one. If a box lands just over 50 lb, see whether it can come back under the line without weakening the packing before you change carriers. The guide to UPS Additional Handling and Large Package surcharges lists every trigger, and UPS vs USPS for heavy packages shows which carrier is lower on each side of that line. For a small, dense item, a USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate box, priced the same to any state up to 70 lb, can cost less than either weight-based price; flat rate vs weight-based shipping has the test.
How much does it cost to ship a 70 lb or 100 lb package?
A 70 lb or 100 lb package costs the UPS Ground rate for its weight and zone plus UPS's Additional Handling fee for boxes over 50 lb, before fuel and other surcharges, and only the 70 lb box also has a USPS price, because USPS accepts nothing over 70 lb.
Between 70 and 100 lb the nearest-zone UPS Ground price climbs much faster than it does below 70 lb: in zone 2 the 100 lb rate is more than double the 70 lb rate, while in zones 5 and 8 it is less than one and a half times the 70 lb rate; the 70 lb and 100 lb rows have the amounts. At 70 lb, once the Additional Handling fee is added, USPS Ground Advantage is the lower published price in zone 2 and about level with UPS in zone 5, before UPS's fuel and demand surcharges.
Every UPS package over 70 lb needs UPS's yellow Heavy Package sticker, placed to the right of the address label with the weight written in. Over 110 lb, UPS swaps Additional Handling for the far larger Large Package Surcharge, and it does not accept a package over 150 lb at all; at that point the shipment is freight, which GoatLabels does not handle.
The guide to how to ship heavy packages covers packing and labeling boxes over 70 lb, and when splitting one heavy box into two or three costs less.
What gets added to the published rate?
UPS adds a weekly fuel surcharge to the published rate, a residential surcharge for home deliveries, a delivery area surcharge in listed ZIP codes and, for heavy or large boxes, Additional Handling or the Large Package Surcharge; USPS Ground Advantage adds no fuel or residential charge but has its own fees for long, bulky or odd-shaped parcels.
UPS charges fuel on each of those surcharges as well as on the rate. From September 27, 2026 through January 16, 2027 it also adds a demand surcharge to every Additional Handling and Large Package shipment, and from October 25, 2026 a smaller one to residential Ground packages.

| UPS demand surcharge on Additional Handling and Large Packages | Packages shipped September 27, 2026 through January 16, 2027. | Additional Handling $8.75, then $11.90 from November 22 to December 26, then $8.75. Large Package $96.25, then $117.50, then $96.25. |
| UPS demand surcharge on Ground residential | Home deliveries October 25, 2026 through January 16, 2027 (UPS's standard schedule). | $0.50, then $0.75 from November 22 to December 26, then $0.50. |
| USPS Ground Advantage length fee | Longer than 22 in up to 30 in, or longer than 30 in. | $4.50, or $10.00 over 30 in. |
| USPS Ground Advantage volume fee | More than 2 cubic feet (3,456 cubic inches). | $21.00. |
| USPS Ground Advantage shape fee | Tubes, rolls, cans, and wooden or metal boxes. | $4.50. |
| USPS Ground Advantage oversized price | Length plus girth over 108 in, up to the 130 in maximum, whatever the weight. | Replaces the weight price: $124.88 zone 2, $206.59 zone 5, $295.93 zone 8. |
| USPS fuel or residential surcharge | USPS Ground Advantage. | None. |
Amounts checked on : UPS 2026 Daily Rate and Service Guide (updated September 7, 2026); UPS Demand Surcharges (August 26, 2026 update); UPS fuel surcharges; UPS charges subject to the fuel surcharge; USPS Notice 123 (effective October 4, 2026). UPS amounts are before fuel. The triggers, minimum weights and the order UPS applies them in are explained in UPS Additional Handling and Large Package surcharges, and each carrier's hard limits are in package size and weight limits. How residential, delivery area and peak-season surcharges work is in shipping surcharges explained.
Why might your label price differ from these numbers?
Your label price will differ because these tables are list prices before any surcharge, while a label is priced for one packed box at its own billable weight, zone and address, with that week's fuel and the price set by whoever sells the label. Shippers with a carrier contract pay their negotiated rates instead, and a box entered at the wrong weight or size can be re-billed after delivery, so weigh it packed and measure the outside of the box. The full arithmetic for one parcel is in how shipping rates are calculated.
What GoatLabels does and does not do. GoatLabels prices USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL side by side on every parcel, one all-in number each, from the box's real weight and its length, width and height. The box size goes to the carrier with every live quote, so the price reflects dimensional weight, and labels are bought only at a live carrier rate. If a carrier re-weighs or re-measures a parcel, the correction shows on that shipment with its reason. You can save up to 20 box sizes, need no carrier account, and pay from a prepaid wallet (card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or ACH) with a ledger line per label; Free is $0 a month with 50 shipments and Pro is $40 a month flat with unlimited shipments. GoatLabels does not handle freight, LTL or pallets, does not offer a hazardous materials service (follow the carrier's own hazmat guidance), and does not use your own carrier account or negotiated rates. Comparing label platforms for heavy and oversized parcels? That guide covers the trade-offs.
Shipping cost by weight, answered
- How much does it cost to ship a 50 lb box across the country?
- Across the country means zone 8, the farthest zone in the 48 states, and it is the most expensive column at every weight: at published prices a 50 lb box costs about three times as much to zone 8 as to zone 2, by UPS Ground or by USPS Ground Advantage. The zone 8 column of the dated table on this page has both amounts, before fuel and any residential or handling surcharge; a live quote for your packed box gives the price you would pay.
- Why does a 20 lb box sometimes cost as much as a 50 lb box?
- Because a large, light box is billed by its size: the 20 x 20 x 20 inch box in the box-size table above bills as 58 lb at UPS and at USPS, which also adds its fee for parcels over 2 cubic feet, so it pays a heavier rate than a compact 50 lb box. Packing the same item in a smaller box brings its price back toward the 20 lb row.
- Do these prices include fuel surcharges?
- No. The UPS Ground prices on this page are base rates before UPS's fuel surcharge, a percentage UPS resets every week and also applies to surcharges such as residential, Additional Handling and the Large Package Surcharge. USPS Ground Advantage has no fuel surcharge, so its published price stands unless a nonstandard fee applies, such as its length, volume or shape fees. A GoatLabels quote is one all-in number per carrier for the box you enter.
- How much does it cost to ship a 100 lb package?
- USPS stops at 70 lb, so a single 100 lb box goes by a carrier such as UPS, which accepts up to 150 lb. With UPS Ground it costs the published 100 lb rate for its zone plus UPS's Additional Handling fee for boxes over 50 lb, then fuel, UPS's demand surcharge on Additional Handling through January 16, 2027, the residential surcharge for a home and the delivery area surcharge in listed ZIP codes; the 100 lb row and the table of added charges on this page have the published amounts. Keeping the box at 110 lb or less matters, because over that UPS charges the far larger Large Package Surcharge instead.
- Does shipping cost rise in a straight line with weight?
- No. Published prices climb unevenly and differently by zone: USPS Ground Advantage climbs steeply between 20 and 26 lb, UPS Ground's nearest-zone price jumps between 70 and 100 lb, and UPS adds a flat per-box fee once a box passes 50 lb and a larger one past 110 lb. Distance moves the price as much as weight does, so read the zone column for your route, not only the weight row.
