Does FedEx have flat rate boxes?
Yes. FedEx sells flat rate shipping as FedEx One Rate. You pick a FedEx envelope, pak, box or tube, and the price depends on the packaging and the service, plus a distance band on the faster services, not the weight. It covers six FedEx Express services only, packages up to 50 pounds, and the packaging is free.
FedEx One Rate works on these six services:
- FedEx Express Saver: 3rd day by 5 p.m.
- FedEx 2Day: 2nd day by 5 p.m.
- FedEx 2Day A.M.: 2nd day by 10:30 a.m.
- FedEx Standard Overnight: next day by 5 p.m.
- FedEx Priority Overnight: next day by 10:30 a.m.
- FedEx First Overnight: next day by 8 or 8:30 a.m.
To homes, the 5 p.m. commitments become 8 p.m., and FedEx notes that some exceptions apply. Our FedEx One Rate overnight post compares the three overnight services.
The price already includes residential surcharges, delivery area surcharges and the fuel surcharge, plus up to $100 of declared value. Saturday delivery, signature options, extra declared value, on-call pickup and address corrections cost extra. No account discounts apply to One Rate prices.
The 8 One Rate packaging types
FedEx lists eight packaging types. Sizes below are in inches, as FedEx lists them. A weight limit applies to every type: envelopes 10 pounds or less, paks, boxes and tubes 50 pounds or less.
| Packaging | Max weight | Size in inches |
|---|---|---|
| FedEx Envelope | 10 lb | 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 (reusable 9 1/2 x 15 1/2, padded 9 3/4 x 11 1/2) |
| FedEx Extra Small Box | 50 lb | 7 1/4 x 2 1/2 x 4 11/16 |
| FedEx Pak | 50 lb | 10 1/4 x 12 3/4 or 12 x 15 1/2 (padded 11 3/4 x 14 3/4, reusable sturdy 10 x 14 1/2) |
| FedEx Small Box | 50 lb | 10 7/8 x 1 1/2 x 12 3/8 or 8 3/4 x 2 5/8 x 11 1/4 |
| FedEx Medium Box | 50 lb | 11 1/2 x 2 3/8 x 13 1/4 or 8 3/4 x 4 3/8 x 11 1/4 |
| FedEx Large Box | 50 lb | 12 3/8 x 3 x 17 1/2 or 8 3/4 x 7 3/4 x 11 1/4 |
| FedEx Extra Large Box | 50 lb | 11 7/8 x 10 3/4 x 11 or 15 3/4 x 14 1/8 x 6 |
| FedEx Tube | 50 lb | 6 x 6 x 38 |
The Extra Small Box is the newest size, available since February 2, 2026. Sizes come from FedEx's One Rate page. FedEx's pricing PDF also points to a packing supplies page with recommended weight limits for each package, so match the box to the load rather than assuming every box suits 50 pounds.
Watch the thickness of envelopes and paks. FedEx rates an Envelope that measures more than 3 inches on its shortest side, or a Pak that measures more than 5 inches, as a One Rate box based on its overall cubic volume. Overstuffing a Pak gives you a box price anyway.
What each box costs
These are FedEx's published list prices for One Rate, effective April 20, 2026, from FedEx's One Rate pricing PDF. They are FedEx list prices, not a quote from any shipping app.
On FedEx Express Saver and FedEx 2Day, each packaging type has one price in all three zone bands:
| Packaging | Express Saver or 2Day |
|---|---|
| FedEx Envelope | $12.75 |
| FedEx Extra Small Box | $13.40 |
| FedEx Pak | $16.30 |
| FedEx Small Box | $19.55 |
| FedEx Medium Box | $24.35 |
| FedEx Large Box | $32.05 |
| FedEx Extra Large Box | $42.75 |
| FedEx Tube | $42.75 |
Express Saver is not available for Alaska and Hawaii shipments. 2Day is.
Faster services cost more, and their prices vary by zone band. 2Day A.M., Standard Overnight, Priority Overnight and First Overnight use three bands: local (zone 2), regional (zones 3 to 4) and national (zones 5 to 8, plus Alaska and Hawaii). For example, a Medium Box on Standard Overnight is $59.40 in the local band, $81.30 in the regional band and $105.80 in the national band. The full table for every box, service and band is in the FedEx PDF and in FedEx One Rate prices 2026. FedEx's rate tools show your zone when you enter the origin and destination ZIP codes.
Does FedEx Ground have flat rate boxes?
No. FedEx One Rate is for FedEx expedited U.S. domestic services only. FedEx Ground and Home Delivery are priced by weight and zone, and FedEx says its standard services are not available with One Rate pricing. Our FedEx Ground flat rate guide covers the closest substitutes.
The slowest One Rate option is Express Saver, which delivers on the 3rd day by 5 p.m. at the same price as 2Day. That is as close as FedEx gets to an economy flat rate. For a light parcel going a short distance, a weight-based rate usually costs less than any flat rate, which our page on flat rate vs weight-based shipping explains.
How to order free FedEx One Rate boxes
FedEx calls the boxes complimentary packaging. There are two ways to get them.
- In store. Go to any FedEx Office or FedEx retail location. Tell a team member you want flat-rate shipping, pick a complimentary box, pack and seal it, and give the team member the destination.
- Online. Order complimentary packaging on fedex.com with a FedEx account. Then create a label, choose FedEx One Rate when you enter the shipment details, print the label and drop the package off or schedule a pickup.
Two limits to know. FedEx says One Rate is not available in the FedEx Mobile app, so use fedex.com or a store. And internal cushioning is not included in the price, so budget for your own tape and void fill. Our guide on where to get free shipping supplies covers what the other carriers give away. If you are deciding between a pak and a box for an item, the trade-offs match our poly mailer vs box comparison.
Can I use my own box?
Not at One Rate list pricing. FedEx requires its own packaging, because the price is for the FedEx container. FedEx describes One Rate as an alternative to its standard list rates, account rates or retail rates, so a box you bought yourself is rated one of those other ways instead.
If you have a negotiated FedEx agreement, ask your FedEx representative whether it changes anything. If you want to ship in your own box at a flat price, UPS Simple Rate is built for that, as the comparison below shows.
FedEx One Rate boxes vs USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes vs UPS Simple Rate
All three are flat rate programs, but they differ on speed, weight and who supplies the box.
| FedEx One Rate | USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate | UPS Simple Rate | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speed | Express: overnight, 2-day or 3-day | Priority Mail, 2 to 3 days, not guaranteed | Next-day, second-day, three-business-day or five-day |
| Weight cap | 50 lb (Envelope 10 lb) | 70 lb | 50 lb |
| Box | FedEx packaging required, free | USPS packaging required, free | Your own box or mailer, up to 1,728 cubic inches |
| Price shape | By packaging type. One price in all bands on Express Saver and 2Day, three bands on the faster services | One price per container nationwide | One national flat rate per size tier |
UPS facts come from UPS's Simple Rate page. USPS facts match our FedEx One Rate vs Priority Mail Flat Rate comparison, which also has a worked example for a heavy box.
How to pick:
- You need speed and a firm delivery commitment: FedEx One Rate in the smallest FedEx box that fits.
- Your box is over 50 pounds: only USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate goes to 70 pounds.
- You want to use your own branded box: UPS Simple Rate, if the box is 1,728 cubic inches or smaller.
- The parcel is light or going a short distance: compare a weight-based quote before you commit to any flat rate.
Whichever you pick, run the same parcel through a weight-based quote first. GoatLabels covers USPS, UPS and FedEx on domestic parcels (DHL on international lanes) and shows the rates side by side, paid from a prepaid wallet, with no monthly fee on Free (up to 50 shipments a month).
