Pirate Ship Tracking: How to Track a Label

How to track a Pirate Ship package: where the tracking number lives, why a label shows pre-shipment, and what to do when scans stop.

Open the label from your Ship page, or paste its tracking number into usps.com or ups.com. Every Pirate Ship label carries a USPS or UPS tracking number, and Pirate Ship shows only what the carrier has scanned. When a status looks stuck, the missing piece is almost always the first carrier scan.

Where tracking lives inside Pirate Ship

Every label you buy on Pirate Ship has a tracking number, printed on the label. Pirate Ship's help center says all the USPS and UPS services it sells include tracking at no extra cost, from USPS Ground Advantage, Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express to UPS Ground and the faster UPS services. Its homepage promises you can "track your packages from start to finish."

To find the number, open the label from your Ship page. The shipment page shows the tracking number and its status updates, with a tracking map.

Pirate Ship does not run a delivery network. It gets tracking data from USPS and UPS, so it can see only what those carriers have scanned. If the carrier's site has nothing new, Pirate Ship has nothing to add.

Track with the carrier directly

You never have to rely on Pirate Ship's screen. Copy the tracking number from the label or the shipment page and paste it into the carrier's own tracker.

  • USPS: a USPS tracking number is typically 22 digits; the sample on usps.com starts 9400. Paste it into the USPS Tracking page.
  • UPS: a UPS tracking number starts with 1Z. Paste it into UPS Tracking.

One difference is worth knowing. Pirate Ship's help center notes that UPS shows time-specific delivery windows, while USPS does not.

USPS also reuses tracking numbers. Pirate Ship's help center warns that a recycled number can make usps.com show another package's history, even a "delivered" status, while your shipment page in Pirate Ship keeps updating as your parcel moves. USPS says it stores USPS Tracking records for 120 days, so look up an old label sooner rather than later.

For international parcels, a number that starts with AHOY means the sender used Simple Export Rate. Track those on the Asendia USA portal instead of usps.com or ups.com.

Why Pirate Ship tracking is not updating

Start with the status text. "Label Created, Not Yet in System" and "USPS Awaiting Item" are both pre-shipment statuses. They mean USPS has not scanned the label yet, and tracking should update once it does.

The usual reasons the first scan is missing:

  • No acceptance scan yet. Drop-offs after hours are not scanned until the next day. A parcel can also wait in a queue at a facility, or staff may not reach it that day.
  • Dropped in a collection box. A box has no scanner, so the first scan waits until the Post Office processes the parcel. Handing it to a clerk at the counter usually gets it scanned sooner.
  • Label printed but not shipped. Tracking starts only when the carrier receives the parcel. A label bought days before handoff, or never handed over, stays at pre-shipment.
  • USPS skipped the initial scan. Pirate Ship's help center says some local Post Offices send packages on without a first scan, and that this has become more common at high volume. It shows up mostly on USPS, not UPS.

How long to wait: UPS is usually quick, and USPS can take up to about a day to show a scan. If several days pass after a USPS drop-off, take the tracking number to your local Post Office and ask what happened. You can also file a Missing Mail Search request on usps.com, which sometimes prompts a tracking update. For a UPS drop-off, go back to the UPS location where you left it.

If the parcel was scanned and then went quiet mid-route, that is a different problem. Gaps between scans are common, and our guides on USPS tracking not updating and packages stuck in transit give day-by-day timelines. For a parcel that never moves, Pirate Ship's help center says to wait 7 business days from the ship date before escalating to USPS.

The tracking emails your buyer gets

Pirate Ship does not email tracking by default. You opt in:

  • Single labels and spreadsheet uploads: include the buyer's email address and tick the Email recipients box.
  • Store integrations such as Shopify: open Settings > Integration Settings, click Edit and enable tracking emails for that platform.
  • eBay and Etsy: Pirate Ship does not receive the buyer's email from eBay, and those marketplaces notify buyers through their own messaging.

By default the email goes out one hour after you buy postage. Change the delay under Settings > Tracking Emails, where you can also edit the template, the subject line and the sender name.

The email contains the tracking number and a link to the USPS or UPS tracking page. Pirate Ship does not send a running series of delivery updates. If you forgot the buyer's email, you cannot add it after purchase. To check whether a label's email went out, open the label on your Ship page and look at the Email Recipients line at the bottom. A date and time means it was sent.

Buyers can also ask USPS directly. After entering the number on the USPS tracking page, they can request text and email updates.

Lost or late: what you can claim

Pirate Ship sells the label. The carrier moves the parcel, so claims run through the carrier.

  • USPS. Domestic Priority Mail and Ground Advantage include $100 of insurance. You file directly with USPS, and either the shipper or the recipient can file. For a missing package USPS reimburses postage, and your Pirate Ship shipment page serves as proof of payment.
  • UPS. Carrier liability is included on each label, $100 on UPS Ground and $50 on UPS Ground Saver. Open the shipment, scroll to the bottom and click File Claim to reach the InsureShield portal.
  • Optional extra coverage. Claims on third-party insurance also go through the InsureShield portal, and only the shipper can file them.
  • UPS money-back guarantee. It covers guaranteed air services such as Next Day Air, not UPS Ground. The parcel must arrive after its guaranteed time, delays outside UPS's control such as severe weather are excluded, and approval is not automatic. You ask Pirate Ship support to submit the request.

Carriers set their own claim deadlines, so file early rather than late.

How GoatLabels handles tracking

Every GoatLabels shipment gets a branded tracking page for your buyer, under goatlabels.io/track, plus tracking emails. Inside the app, Billy answers "where is my package" for your shipments.

GoatLabels cannot make a carrier scan a parcel. A package nobody has scanned shows no movement on GoatLabels either. What changes is how much you have to chase: the buyer gets a page and emails, and you get an answer in the app.

GoatLabels quotes USPS, UPS and FedEx on domestic parcels (DHL on international lanes), with no monthly fee on Free (up to 50 shipments a month). Pirate Ship sells USPS and UPS only. If you need FedEx in the same quote, read Pirate Ship vs GoatLabels or the shorter Pirate Ship comparison page.

FAQ

How do I track a Pirate Ship package?

Open the label from your Ship page, or paste its tracking number into usps.com or ups.com. Pirate Ship pulls its status from the carrier, so it follows the carrier's own scans.

Where is the tracking number on a Pirate Ship label?

It is printed on the label itself and shown on the shipment page after you buy. A UPS number starts with 1Z, and a USPS number is a long run of digits.

Why does my Pirate Ship tracking say pre-shipment?

Statuses such as Label Created, Not Yet in System or USPS Awaiting Item mean USPS has not scanned the label yet. Tracking updates after the first carrier scan.

Why is my Pirate Ship tracking not updating?

Pirate Ship shows only what USPS or UPS has scanned. After-hours drop-offs, facility queues and skipped first scans are the usual causes, and USPS can take about a day to show a scan.

Does the buyer get tracking emails from Pirate Ship?

Only if you opt in by adding the buyer's email and ticking Email recipients when you buy the label, or by enabling it for your store integration. The email carries the tracking number and a carrier link, and by default it goes out one hour after purchase.

Can I track a Pirate Ship label on usps.com or ups.com?

Yes: every Pirate Ship label has a USPS or UPS tracking number you can paste into the carrier's own tracking page. Numbers that start with AHOY are Simple Export Rate parcels, tracked on the Asendia USA portal.

What if a Pirate Ship package is lost?

Wait out the carrier's normal window, then file a Missing Mail Search with USPS or a claim through the InsureShield portal for UPS. Domestic Priority Mail and Ground Advantage include $100 of USPS insurance.

Does Pirate Ship use FedEx?

No. Pirate Ship sells USPS and UPS labels only (its rates page, checked October 23, 2026), while GoatLabels quotes USPS, UPS and FedEx on domestic parcels (DHL on international lanes).
