What are the 2026 carrier cutoffs for holiday delivery?

USPS, UPS and FedEx have published their 2026 holiday ship-by dates. USPS announced its domestic dates on Sept. 22, 2026 and lists international and military dates on its holiday shipping page; UPS and FedEx publish theirs as PDF schedules. Two things about these dates that sellers routinely get wrong:

They are recommendations, not promises. USPS calls its dates recommended send-by dates for expected delivery and says actual delivery depends on origin, destination, Post Office acceptance time and other conditions. UPS and FedEx both say their schedules can change. A few express services come with a carrier refund policy for late delivery, and those terms change too: FedEx's money-back policy page lists the services it covers today, and USPS notes on its holiday shipping page that since Aug. 1, 2023 it no longer processes late-delivery refund requests for Priority Mail Express to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and U.S. territories. Read the carrier's own terms for the service you are buying.

They describe network entry, not label purchase. The cutoff is the day the package needs its acceptance scan, physically in the carrier's system, not the day you buy the label or the day the order comes in.

UPS lists its Dec. 23 Next Day Air date for packages picked up through a UPS On-Call Pickup, a UPS Smart Pickup or another prearranged pickup, or handed in at The UPS Store or a UPS Authorized Service Location. On Christmas Eve UPS delivers as usual but picks up only Air and International Air packages arranged by Friday, Dec. 18, and on Christmas Day there is no UPS pickup or delivery. FedEx Ground and Home Delivery dates depend on the transit days between the two ZIP codes, typically 1 to 5 business days in the contiguous U.S. per FedEx, and assume a regular scheduled pickup or a drop-off at a staffed FedEx location; the FedEx last days to ship page links the PDF and a transit map. USPS also notes that Hanukkah (Dec. 4 to Dec. 12) comes earlier this year, so ship those gifts well ahead of these dates.

What are the 2026 dates for international, military and offshore addresses?

Only some of these dates come early. USPS Ground Advantage to APO/FPO/DPO military addresses is due Wednesday, Nov. 4, about six weeks before the domestic Ground Advantage date. USPS First-Class Package International, Priority Mail International and military First-Class Mail and Priority Mail are due Wednesday, Dec. 9, about a week before the domestic dates. USPS First-Class Mail, Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express dates to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and U.S. territories match the lower 48 (for Ground Advantage there USPS gives no date and expects 10 days or more in transit). Every UPS and FedEx date to Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico below falls between Dec. 21 and Dec. 23, within two days of the same carrier's domestic overnight date. The USPS dates below are for expected delivery before December 25; the UPS and FedEx dates are for delivery by December 24.

UPS gives no single date for UPS Standard to Canada or Mexico. For those and for other countries, UPS points to its Calculate Time and Cost tool at ups.com/ctc and FedEx to fedex.com/ratefinder, and FedEx says its international dates do not include time for customs clearance. USPS adds that Priority Mail Express Military Service is available only at selected military and diplomatic Post Offices. If you ship to military addresses or with USPS international services, post those dates first, starting with the Nov. 4 military Ground Advantage date.

How much should you pad carrier deadlines for handling time?

The carrier's cutoff answers "when must the package enter the network?" Your customers need the answer to a different question: "when is the last day I can order?" The gap between those two dates is your handling time, and pretending it's zero is how sellers end up packing at midnight on cutoff day.

Build your order deadline backwards:

Start from the carrier cutoff for the slowest service you offer.
Subtract your honest handling time. Not your best-ever: your December handling time, when volume is up. If you ship twice a week, pad half a week minimum.
Subtract one buffer day for the things December reliably produces: a printer jam, a missed drop-off, a sick day, a parcel that misses the day's outbound scan because you arrived after the counter's last pickup.
Subtract another day if you make to order, or more. Made-to-order shops should set their deadline off production time first and shipping second.

A concrete example: USPS recommends Thursday, Dec. 17 for Ground Advantage. If you ship every other day, your last safe order date for ground-shipped gifts is three to four days earlier, around Sunday, Dec. 13 or Monday, Dec. 14, and that is the date that belongs in your shop banner, not the carrier's date. Marketplace sellers get a bonus from the same math: dispatch metrics like Etsy's Star Seller shipping stats and TikTok Shop's late dispatch rate are measured against your stated processing time, and December is precisely when a too-optimistic processing time damages both gifts and metrics. Pad it now, before the rush.

The acceptance scan deserves special December respect. A package dropped in a bin after the day's last collection enters the network tomorrow, which on cutoff day means it missed the cutoff. In the final week, hand packages over at a scanning counter and get a receipt.

What do you tell buyers who order after the cutoff?

First: tell them before they order. The highest-leverage holiday move is a visible deadline (shop announcement, product pages, order confirmation) stating the last order date for December 24 delivery at each shipping speed. Buyers who know the ground deadline passed will pay for faster shipping or accept a later arrival they chose with open eyes; buyers who find out after checkout write the reviews you'll live with in January.

For orders that land after a deadline anyway:

Offer the upgrade honestly. "Standard shipping won't arrive by the 24th, but an express service still can. Here's the difference in cost." In the last week before Christmas, express fees are cheap compared to a missed holiday. How do peak-season surcharges change December pricing?

The deadline is only half of December's shipping math. The other half is that the same label costs more. Carriers apply peak or demand surcharges during the holiday window: per-package fees layered on top of base rates, varying by service and package characteristics. Oversize and additional-handling fees tend to carry their own peak premiums, so bulky items get hit twice.

What this means practically:

Your November quote is not your December quote. A parcel you priced in the fall costs more in peak weeks. If your listings carry flat shipping prices calibrated to off-peak rates, December quietly eats the difference.
The cheapest carrier can change for peak. Surcharges differ across carriers, so the network that wins a given parcel in October may lose it in December. What does a sane December shipping calendar look like?

Work the season as four phases rather than one long emergency:

October: decide and stock. The 2026 cutoffs are out (see the tables above) and USPS holiday prices started October 4. Put the real dates in your calendar, set your padded order deadlines, and stock packaging supplies before they get scarce. If you ship Ground Advantage to military addresses, USPS's date is Wednesday, Nov. 4, so that one cannot wait.

November: announce. Deadlines go up in your shop, on product pages, and in your email flow. Update listing shipping prices for peak surcharges. International deadlines go up first and loudest: USPS lists Wednesday, Dec. 9 for First-Class Package International and Priority Mail International. UPS lists no pickup or delivery on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 26.

Early December: ship on rhythm. Move to a fixed daily or every-other-day shipping rhythm; batching by rhythm rather than by mood keeps handling time flat while volume doubles. Watch your dispatch metrics weekly instead of monthly.

Cutoff week: tighten and verify. Counter drop-offs with acceptance scans only. Express-only messaging for late orders. On each published cutoff day, ship everything ready to go, then update your shop messaging the hour that deadline passes.
