Black Friday Shipping Prep: A 30-Day Checklist
A dated 30-day plan for small sellers before Black Friday 2026: supplies, printer tests, address cleanup, holiday surcharges, cutoffs and a dry run.
Start on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, and use the 30 days before Black Friday (Friday, November 27) for four jobs: stock supplies and test the printer, clean up addresses and product weights, pick services with holiday prices in mind, then post order-by cutoffs and run one full dry run. Each job takes about a week, and finishing early leaves room for peak-week surprises.
What should you do in the 30 days before Black Friday?
Work in weekly blocks, each with a clear "done when" test, so you know when to move on.
| Dates, 2026 (example plan) | Focus | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| Wed Oct 28 to Tue Nov 3 | Supplies and printer | Peak-week boxes, tape and labels on the shelf; a test label printed and scanned |
| Wed Nov 4 to Tue Nov 10 | Addresses and product data | Saved weights and box sizes checked; known bad addresses fixed |
| Wed Nov 11 to Tue Nov 17 | Services and prices | A default service per order size; holiday increases in what you charge |
| Wed Nov 18 to Tue Nov 24 | Cutoffs and dry run | Order-by dates posted; one dry run done and fixed |
| Wed Nov 25 | Staging | Postage funded, boxes pre-built, station cleared |
| Thu Nov 26 to Mon Nov 30 | Cyber 5 | Orders ship in batches, not one at a time |
Which holiday price changes are already in effect?
All three large US carriers charge more this season, and most increases start before Black Friday. USPS set temporary holiday prices on Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select from 12 a.m. CT on Oct. 4, 2026 to 12 a.m. CT on Jan. 17, 2027, and the USPS announcement says no other USPS products are affected. At commercial prices, which are what label software users pay, the per-package increases are:
| Weight | Priority Mail and Ground Advantage, Zones 1-4 | Ground Advantage, Zones 5-9 | Priority Mail, Zones 5-9 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-3 lb | +$0.40 | +$0.55 | +$0.85 |
| 4-10 lb | +$0.65 | +$1.05 | +$1.75 |
| 11-25 lb | +$1.05 | +$1.75 | +$3.85 |
| 26-70 lb | +$3.15 (also Oversized) | +$7.70 | +$9.10 |
UPS and FedEx add a Demand Surcharge per package instead, on top of base rates and all other charges. Per the UPS demand surcharge schedule, UPS Ground Residential and Ground Saver packages pay $0.50 from Oct. 25 to Nov. 21, 2026, $0.75 from Nov. 22 to Dec. 26, and $0.50 from Dec. 27 to Jan. 16, 2027. UPS air services pay $1.35, rising to $2.50 from Nov. 22 to Dec. 26. FedEx's demand surcharge page lists $0.50, then $0.80 from Nov. 23 to Dec. 27, then $0.50 through Jan. 17, 2027 for FedEx Ground Residential and Home Delivery residential shipments, and $1.20 to $2.55 per package on express services.
Bulky boxes take the largest hit. According to the carrier schedules, UPS Additional Handling is $8.75 per package from Sept. 27, 2026 and $11.90 from Nov. 22 to Dec. 26, while FedEx Additional Handling is $8.80 from Sept. 28 and $11.85 from Nov. 23 to Dec. 27. These numbers can still move: UPS says Demand Periods may be extended, and FedEx says it can reassess or reinstate its surcharge at its sole discretion.
Worked example: the holiday premium on Cyber 5 orders
Example (hypothetical numbers): a soap shop expects 240 orders over Cyber 5 (Nov. 26 to Nov. 30, 2026), each in a 2 lb box, half to Zones 1-4 and half to Zones 5-9.
| Example option | Calculation | Holiday premium |
|---|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage, commercial prices | 120 x $0.40 + 120 x $0.55 | $114.00 |
| UPS Ground Residential, Demand Surcharge | 240 x $0.75 | $180.00 |
Neither figure is the full label cost. It is only what the season adds on top of base rates, which differ by carrier, lane and box. In this example, about $0.48 to $0.75 per order comes out of margin if your shipping charge or free-shipping threshold was set on summer prices. Our free shipping economics guide shows how to test a threshold against numbers like these.
How do you get supplies and the printer ready?
Count supplies against your expected Cyber 5 volume, then test every piece of hardware by Tuesday, November 3, 2026. FedEx's holiday tips for small businesses tell sellers to plan stock and packaging for Cyber 5. Stock each box size your top products use plus one size up for bundles, tape, void fill and label rolls for the whole peak week. Running out of one size pushes you into larger boxes that can bill at a higher dimensional weight.
USPS's 2026 holiday shipping page lists four prep steps: check the recommended dates, get free shipping supplies, print labels and schedule a free package pickup.
For the printer, print a 4x6 test label, scan its barcode with a phone and check that nothing is cut off. Clean the print head, install driver updates now rather than in peak week, and pick a backup, such as Letter-size labels on an office printer. Check your scale against an item whose weight you know.
How do you clean up addresses before the rush?
Fix address data now, because every bad address in peak week costs a reprint, a carrier address correction or a late gift. Holiday orders raise the risk: buyers type a relative's address from memory, and gifts often go to an apartment or office for the first time.
- Re-check saved addresses for repeat customers, especially missing apartment, suite or unit numbers.
- Pull last season's returned or corrected shipments and fix the source records. Our guide to fixing address validation errors covers the common causes.
- Mark residential and business destinations correctly. The UPS and FedEx Demand Surcharges above apply to residential ground deliveries, so a wrong flag changes your quote.
While you are in the data, weigh each product in its packed box and update its saved weight and dimensions. A label bought on a stale weight can come back later as a carrier adjustment.
How do you choose services and set order-by cutoffs?
Give each order size one default service, then set a customer order-by date that leaves room for your handling time. Holiday pricing hits heavy boxes hardest: in the USPS table, a 26-70 lb Ground Advantage box to Zones 5-9 costs $7.70 more, while a 0-3 lb box costs $0.55 more.
FedEx's holiday tips advise setting an "order by" deadline you can meet, telling customers early and often, adding a delay disclaimer at checkout and promoting gift cards after your cutoff. Start from the carrier ship-by dates in our 2026 holiday shipping deadlines post, subtract your handling days, and post the result on your store. Plan separately for Hanukkah: USPS notes it runs Dec. 4 to Dec. 12, 2026, well before Christmas, so those gift orders need an earlier order-by date.
Before you buy, check the estimated delivery date, not only the price. A service that lands a day after your promise is the wrong service, however low the rate.
What does a Black Friday dry run look like?
A dry run is one full pass through your Black Friday process with a few real orders, done by Tuesday, November 24, 2026, so problems surface while there is time to fix them. Our batch fulfillment day workflow lays out the station order.
- Pick 10 orders that cover your common box sizes, one heavy order and one gift to a new address.
- Pull them the way you will on Black Friday: store sync, CSV file or manual entry.
- Buy and print the labels and packing slips as one batch, and time it.
- Weigh each sealed box and compare it with the saved weight.
- Check each estimated delivery date against your posted promise.
- Stage the boxes for drop-off or pickup, and confirm your drop-off location's Black Friday hours.
- Cancel any unused label, list every step that broke, and fix it by Wednesday, November 25.
Where GoatLabels fits
GoatLabels rate-shops USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL from one account with one all-in price per rate, so you can compare a ground and a faster service side by side. It checks each destination address before purchase, and a Residential yes/no toggle feeds the quote. You can set the ship date up to 14 days ahead and the estimated delivery date follows it. For Cyber 5, bulk CSV import takes up to 500 rows per file, checks each row separately, and lets you merge up to 50 labels and packing slips into one PDF.
The limits matter in peak week. The Free plan covers 50 shipments a month, which a busy Black Friday weekend can pass, so compare it with the flat $40 Pro plan on the pricing page before November 27. Labels are paid from a prepaid wallet, so fund it early, and carrier adjustments such as re-weighs can post after delivery. Support is email and the in-app assistant, with no phone line. A cancelled unused label refunds only once the carrier confirms it was not used, which the app says typically takes 3 to 10 days.
