Business shipping account: UPS, FedEx, USPS or one account for all three

What each one is and what it asks of you.

A business shipping account is either a carrier's own account, such as a UPS, FedEx or USPS business account, or one account with a shipping platform. GoatLabels is the second kind: one account quotes USPS, UPS and FedEx on each domestic parcel, with no carrier accounts to open. It is not a carrier's own account.

What is a business shipping account?

A business shipping account is an account a company uses to buy postage and print labels under its own name and billing. There are two kinds. The first is a carrier's own account: a UPS shipping account, a FedEx business account, or a USPS.com account with the Business Rate Card. The second is one account with a shipping platform that prices several carriers for you. The two are easy to confuse, because a search for one often lands on the other, so this page keeps them apart.

Carrier account facts, checked

  • UPS says a UPS shipping account is free, that it gives businesses and frequent shippers flexible billing, recurring pickups, specialized support and marketplace connections, and that you add a payment method to a UPS profile to get started (UPS open an account page).
  • UPS also says you do not need an account to ship with UPS, and that you do not need a UPS account to ship with one of its Digital Access (DAP) partners, which are third-party shipping platforms (same UPS page).
  • FedEx says personal and business FedEx accounts are both free, recommends a business account if you sell a product or service, and asks for a credit card number at setup, with a temporary $1 hold possible to verify it (FedEx open an account page).
  • FedEx lists three things that only its business account gets: automatic FedEx Rewards enrollment, an initial sales support call and business-specific discounts. It also says you do not need a FedEx account to ship (same FedEx page).
  • USPS says a free USPS.com account opens Click-N-Ship, where all customers get Commercial Rates and businesses can opt in to the Business Rate Card for additional savings on select services (USPS Shipping for Business page).
  • USPS describes its Business Customer Gateway as the hub for large-volume mailers and shippers, with some programs open only to businesses that meet volume requirements (same USPS page).

These are each carrier's own statements about its own account. GoatLabels is a separate company, and a GoatLabels account is not a UPS, FedEx or USPS account.

Checked 2026-11-06. The carrier rows report what UPS, FedEx and USPS say on the pages linked. Each carrier decides who gets its account and on what terms.

Do you need a UPS, FedEx or USPS business account to ship as a business?

No. UPS and FedEx both say on their account pages that you can ship without an account, and USPS gives every customer Commercial Rates in Click-N-Ship on a free USPS.com account. What a carrier account adds is that carrier's own billing, pickups, support line and whatever discount the carrier decides to offer you.

What a carrier account does not add is a second or a third carrier. Each account covers one carrier, so a company that ships with all three ends up with three logins, three bills and three sets of terms, and still has to compare prices by hand on every box.

When is a carrier's own account the better choice?

A carrier's own account is the better choice when your prices come from a contract with that carrier, or when you need something only the carrier sells.

  • You have negotiated rates. GoatLabels cannot use your own UPS or FedEx account, contract or negotiated rates, so a discount a carrier gives you stays on that carrier's account.
  • You ship freight. GoatLabels does not sell freight, LTL or pallet shipping, and it does not sell UPS Hundredweight Service or FedEx Ground Economy.
  • Your customer pays the carrier. GoatLabels cannot bill a customer's carrier account, so collect and third-party billing stay on a carrier account.
  • You want the carrier's own programs. Recurring pickups billed to your account, FedEx Rewards and a carrier sales contact come with the carrier's account, not with a platform.

Many companies keep both: the carrier account for contract volume, and one platform account for the parcels the contract does not price well. For the contract side, see how a small business can get discounted UPS rates and how to negotiate UPS and FedEx rates.

What is a GoatLabels account, and what is it not?

A GoatLabels account is one account with a shipping platform: it prices USPS (up to 70 lb), UPS and FedEx side by side on each domestic parcel, and DHL on international lanes, with no carrier account needed. It is not a UPS, FedEx or USPS account, it gives you no carrier account number, and GoatLabels is not the carrier.

What GoatLabels does and does not do. You enter the parcel once, with its real weight and box size, read each carrier's price for it, and buy the label from a prepaid wallet. Each label is a dated ledger line that carries your reference. Store connectors: Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, eBay and Wix. Orders from other channels arrive by CSV import, up to 500 rows per file, or through the REST API, which is on both plans. Label prices are the same on the Free and Pro plans, and Free covers 50 shipments a month.

The limits: a quote is the price at purchase, not a final cost. If the carrier's live price is higher when you buy, the higher price is charged, and a carrier adjustment after shipping, such as a re-weigh or a dimension correction, posts to the same wallet later. You cannot bring your own carrier contract, there is no freight or LTL, and support is by email and the in-app assistant, with no phone line. High-volume shippers can ask about custom pricing, which we review account by account. There is no automatic volume tier.

What does verification involve?

Verification is a one-time application and an ID check before money goes into the wallet. Sign up in seconds. Your first top-up may need an approved application. A quote you read before approval can change after it. Because the wallet is prepaid, there is no credit line to apply for.

When it applies, the application asks for:

  1. Whether you ship as an individual or as a business.
  2. Your full legal name, as it appears on your ID.
  3. Your business name, if you ship as a business.
  4. A link to your store or website. A business that sells only in person can leave it out.
  5. Where you sell, and roughly how many parcels you ship in a month.
  6. A photo ID and a selfie, in a check hosted by Persona.

A person on the GoatLabels team reviews each application and emails the decision. You apply once per account, and a decline is final for that account. Before that step you can already create shipments and read live quotes, so you can see prices on your own parcels before you show an ID. GoatLabels asks because selling postage online attracts fraud, and the check keeps fraudulent shippers off the platform.

How do you get started as a business?

Start with a quote on a parcel you really ship, because reading a quote needs no application.

  1. Create the account and save a ship-from address.
  2. Quote a real parcel: its packed weight, box size and destination ZIP.
  3. Put that price beside what the same parcel costs on your carrier account, if you have one.
  4. Complete the application when you are ready to fund the wallet.
  5. Top up, buy the first label, then bring the rest of your orders in by store connector, CSV or API.

If you would rather talk first, send a few typical orders through the shipping review form, or book a 30-minute shipping review, and a person prices them across the carriers with you. Teams that ship from an ERP, a warehouse system or several sites can start from the business shipping guides, which list every guide by system, industry and job. B2B shipping software for wholesale parcels and multi-location shipping software are the usual first reads.

What does a business shipping account cost to open?

Opening one is free in every case on this page: UPS, FedEx and USPS each say so on the pages cited above, and the GoatLabels Free plan has no monthly fee for up to 50 shipments a month. What you pay for is postage. On GoatLabels, Pro is one flat monthly price with unlimited shipments, label prices are the same on the Free and Pro plans, and the pricing page has the current figures.

Business shipping account: FAQ

Do I need a UPS business account or a FedEx business account to use GoatLabels?
No. A GoatLabels account prices USPS (up to 70 lb), UPS and FedEx side by side on domestic parcels, and DHL on international lanes, with no carrier account needed. GoatLabels cannot use your own UPS or FedEx account, contract or negotiated rates.
Is a GoatLabels account a UPS, FedEx or USPS account?
No. It is one account with a shipping platform. It gives you no carrier account number, and a carrier's own programs, such as FedEx Rewards or a UPS recurring pickup, stay with that carrier's account.
What does GoatLabels ask for before I can fund the wallet?
Your first top-up may need an approved application. When it applies, it asks whether you ship as an individual or a business, your legal name, your business name, a store or website link, where you sell and your monthly shipments, then a photo ID and a selfie. A person reviews it and emails the decision.
Can I see prices before I verify?
Yes. You can create shipments and read live quotes before the application. A quote you read before approval can change after it.
Is a carrier's business account free to open?
UPS, FedEx and USPS each say on their own pages that the account is free to open. UPS asks for a payment method, FedEx asks for a credit card number and may place a small temporary hold to verify it, and USPS Click-N-Ship runs on a free USPS.com account. Checked November 6, 2026.
