USPS Ground Advantage vs UPS Ground: rates by weight

The crossing moves with the zone.

USPS Ground Advantage vs UPS Ground has no single crossover weight. At published prices checked November 5, 2026, UPS Ground stays lower through 50 lb from 20 to 22 lb by zone on its base Daily Rate, and from 24 to 25 lb once its weekly fuel surcharge is added, which is what a Daily Rates shipper pays. A 20 lb box runs $18.11 to $42.14 on USPS and $25.01 to $56.44 on UPS with fuel, from zone 2 to zone 8. USPS stops at 70 lb. These are carrier list rates before other surcharges, not GoatLabels prices.

At what weight does UPS Ground cost less than USPS Ground Advantage?

There is no single weight, because the two price lists cross at different pounds in different zones. On published base rates, UPS Ground stays lower from 20 lb in zone 6, from 21 lb in zones 2, 5, 7 and 8, and from 22 lb in zones 3 and 4, through 50 lb. UPS applies a weekly fuel surcharge to Ground on Daily Rates, and with it added UPS stays lower from 25 lb in zones 2, 3 and 4 and from 24 lb in zones 5 to 8, so those are the weights a Daily Rates shipper meets. Below them USPS Ground Advantage is lower; before fuel the two trade places more than once in zones 5, 6 and 8. Past 50 lb UPS adds a handling fee, and over 70 lb USPS does not take the box.

USPS and UPS facts, checked

  • USPS Ground Advantage Commercial-Parcels prices at 20 lb are $18.11 in zone 2, $26.68 in zone 5 and $42.14 in zone 8, and at 50 lb $50.22, $97.30 and $157.97 (USPS Notice 123, effective October 4, 2026). USPS says these holiday prices stay in effect until January 17, 2027 (USPS holiday price release).
  • UPS Ground Daily Rates at 20 lb are $19.20 in zone 2, $26.97 in zone 5 and $43.33 in zone 8, and at 50 lb $29.53, $53.02 and $90.26, before fuel and surcharges (2026 UPS Rate and Service Guide, Daily Rates, updated September 7, 2026, pp.89-90).
  • USPS Ground Advantage takes parcels up to 70 lb and 130 inches in combined length and girth (USPS Ground Advantage page). Over 108 inches a parcel pays the oversized price for its zone whatever it weighs: $124.88 in zone 2, $206.59 in zone 5, $295.93 in zone 8 (Notice 123).
  • UPS adds Additional Handling for weight to any package over 50 lb actual weight: $46.50 in zone 2, $50.75 in zones 3 and 4, $56.25 in zones 5 and 6, and $58.75 in zone 7 and up (UPS guide p.179).
  • USPS adds $4.50 to a parcel over 22 inches long, $10.00 over 30 inches long and $21.00 over 2 cubic feet (Notice 123).

Published carrier rates and surcharges are a benchmark, not what a GoatLabels label costs: a GoatLabels quote is one all-in number per carrier for your packed parcel.

How to read the table

Read the crossing as two bands, not a line: about 20 to 22 lb on base rates, and 24 to 25 lb once UPS's fuel surcharge is added, which is what a Daily Rates shipper pays. Some of the base-rate gaps are a few cents: at 21 lb in zone 7 the two prices differ by two cents, and at 6 lb in zone 8 they list the same price. Where a zone trades places under 20 lb, each stretch is a small gap between two lists that climb in steps, and fuel erases it. These crossings hold for a shipper on UPS Daily Rates. A shipper with no UPS payment account or scheduled pickup is on UPS Retail Rates, a different list, where they do not hold (UPS rates page).

Why is there no single crossover weight?

Because each carrier prices distance its own way, and the USPS list changes slope at 20 lb. Between 20 and 26 lb the USPS commercial price more than doubles in zones 5 and 8 and rises by about three quarters in zone 2, while UPS Ground climbs far more slowly over the same pounds. That is why every zone settles on UPS at nearly the same weight, within a pound or two of 21 lb on base rates and at 24 or 25 lb with fuel, even though the lighter pounds behave differently from zone to zone.

What happens between 51 and 70 lb?

UPS adds Additional Handling to any package that actually weighs more than 50 lb, and USPS Ground Advantage has no weight fee, so the comparison turns back toward USPS. Before fuel, USPS is lower at every pound from 51 to 70 lb in zones 2, 3 and 4, and at most pounds in zone 5, where the two stay within about a dollar at the top. UPS is lower again from 54 lb in zone 6 and from 52 lb in zone 7, and it stays lower in zone 8.

Fuel settles it. UPS applies its fuel surcharge to the handling fee as well as the rate, and with fuel added USPS is lower at every pound from 51 to 70 lb in every zone from 2 to 8. The fee follows the scale, not the box: a large box that bills over 50 lb by dimensional weight but weighs less does not get the weight fee.

Over 70 lb the comparison ends: USPS does not accept the box, and UPS takes it up to 150 lb. The UPS lines above that, including the Large Package Surcharge, are on what the UPS Large Package Surcharge costs.

How much does the UPS fuel surcharge move the crossing?

It moves every crossing a few pounds heavier and removes the back and forth. With the Domestic Ground surcharge UPS lists from November 2, 2026, UPS stays lower from 25 lb in zones 2, 3 and 4 and from 24 lb in zones 5 to 8, and USPS is lower at every pound below that. Across every weekly rate in UPS's 90-day table, from August 10 to November 2, 2026, the crossing stays between 23 and 25 lb in every zone.

USPS Ground Advantage lists no fuel surcharge in Notice 123 today. Supply Chain Dive reported on October 26, 2026 that USPS will begin a weekly fuel surcharge on package services, including Ground Advantage, in January 2027 (Supply Chain Dive), which would pull these crossings back toward lighter weights.

What assumptions sit behind these numbers?

These numbers rest on list prices, one box priced at its scale weight, and the same zone number at both carriers. Change any of those and a crossing can move, so each assumption and its source is in the table.

Assumptions behind the USPS Ground Advantage and UPS Ground crossover, with sources, checked 2026-11-05
Assumption What the numbers use Source
Prices Published lists only: UPS Ground Daily Rates and USPS Ground Advantage Commercial-Parcels. UPS says Daily Rates apply with a scheduled pickup or a contract that provides them; USPS says Click-N-Ship postage gets Commercial Rates. No negotiated or contract rate is in the numbers. A shipper with no UPS payment account or scheduled pickup is on UPS Retail Rates, where these crossings do not hold. UPS rates page; USPS Ground Advantage
Surcharges None in the base-rate column: no fuel, residential, delivery area, demand or nonstandard fees. The 51 to 70 lb column adds only UPS Additional Handling for weight. UPS guide p.179
UPS fuel column 30.25%, the Domestic Ground surcharge UPS lists from November 2, 2026, applied to the rate and to Additional Handling. It changes weekly. UPS fuel surcharges; UPS charges with fuel applied
Weight Billable weight equals scale weight, in whole pounds, because both carriers round up. That holds only where dimensional weight does not apply: USPS applies it over 1 cubic foot, and UPS to every box on Daily Rates. UPS guide p.19; USPS Ground Advantage
Zones The same zone number on both, zones 2 to 8. Each carrier sets its own zones, so one lane can fall in different zones at each. UPS guide p.89; USPS Notice 123
Not compared USPS zones 1 and 9, which have no UPS Ground column, USPS retail prices (one question below), the separate Commercial Parcels Cubic table in Notice 123, geographic price groups reported through eBay that Notice 123 does not list, UPS Retail Rates and UPS Ground Saver, which UPS sells only under contract. USPS Notice 123; eBay geographic pricing notice; UPS guide pp.176-177

How does box size change the answer?

A bulky box can land on the other side of the crossing, because both carriers can bill it above its scale weight. USPS applies dimensional weight only over 1 cubic foot, while UPS applies it to every box on Daily Rates, each dividing length x width x height by 139 after rounding each side up.

Example: a 20 x 14 x 12 in box holding 22 lb, going to zone 5, with UPS fuel added. At 22 lb USPS would be lower, but the box measures 3,360 cubic inches, and 3,360 divided by 139 rounds up to 25 lb at both carriers. At 25 lb UPS is lower, so the bigger box changes the carrier. The box is under 2 cubic feet and under 22 inches long, so it picks up no USPS size fee.

Worked example: a 20 x 14 x 12 in box holding 22 lb to zone 5 on USPS Ground Advantage and UPS Ground, at its scale weight and its billable weight, checked 2026-11-05
Zone 5 price USPS Ground Advantage UPS Ground base rate UPS Ground with fuel
At 22 lb, its scale weight $31.20 $28.43 $37.03
At 25 lb, what the box bills $48.69 $30.87 $40.21

Checked 2026-11-05: UPS guide, updated September 7, 2026 (p.89); USPS Notice 123, effective October 4, 2026; fuel from UPS fuel surcharges.

A smaller box is billed by different rules at each carrier: 12 x 12 x 12 in at 8 lb bills 13 lb at UPS and stays at 8 lb at USPS, because it is not over 1 cubic foot, so measure the box before you compare. How both rules work is in dimensional weight, explained.

What else differs besides the rate?

The limits differ most: USPS Ground Advantage stops at 70 lb and 130 inches, and UPS Ground goes to 150 lb and 165 inches, with UPS adding fuel and residential charges that USPS Ground Advantage does not list.

When will these crossings change?

The next list change comes on December 21, 2026, when UPS Daily Rates for Ground increase (UPS rates page), and the fuel column moves every week before that. USPS's holiday prices end on January 17, 2027, and the USPS fuel surcharge reported for January 2027 would change the comparison too, so re-price your usual parcels in late December and again in late January.

How should a business shipper use the crossing?

Use it to know where to look, then price the packed box, because the delivery address, box size and your own rates each move the answer.

  1. Up to about 23 lb, expect USPS Ground Advantage to be lower once UPS fuel is added, even where the base rates are close.
  2. From about 25 to 50 lb, expect UPS Ground to be lower to a business address, fuel included.
  3. From 51 to 70 lb by actual weight, expect USPS to be lower once UPS fuel and handling are added.
  4. Over 70 lb, or past 130 inches, USPS does not take the box, so compare UPS with FedEx instead.
  5. To a home, add UPS's residential charge and its fuel before you compare, which keeps USPS lower for longer in near zones.

If you ship enough to hold your own UPS rates, those rates decide it. What UPS publishes for small businesses is on how a small business can get discounted UPS rates, and the wider heavy comparison, with fees by box size, is on UPS vs USPS for heavy packages.

What GoatLabels does and does not do. GoatLabels prices USPS (up to 70 lb), UPS and FedEx side by side on domestic parcels, and DHL on international lanes, one all-in number each before you buy, and no carrier account is needed. A quote needs the real weight and the box's length, width and height, and the box size goes to the carrier with every live quote. Label prices are the same on the Free and Pro plans, and Free covers 50 shipments a month.

The limits: it is not a dimensional-weight calculator and does not show billable weight, it ships parcels only, with no freight, LTL or pallets, and it cannot use your own carrier account or negotiated rates. The crossings on this page are carrier prices, so a GoatLabels quote for the same box can land somewhere else; carrier adjustments after delivery post to the same wallet.

USPS Ground Advantage vs UPS Ground: FAQ

Is USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground cheaper at 20 lb?
On published prices, USPS Ground Advantage is lower at 20 lb in zones 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8, by small amounts, and UPS Ground's base rate is lower in zone 6. UPS then adds its weekly fuel surcharge, which USPS Ground Advantage does not list, and with fuel added USPS is lower at 20 lb in every zone from 2 to 8.
Is UPS Ground cheaper than USPS Ground Advantage for a 50 lb box?
To a business address, yes: on published prices UPS Ground is lower in every zone from 2 to 8, even after UPS adds fuel. To a home, UPS also adds its residential surcharge and, until January 16, 2027, its Ground residential demand surcharge, which leaves the two about level in zone 3 to a home; the other zones stay lower at UPS. One pound later the answer changes: a box that weighs more than 50 lb picks up UPS Additional Handling for weight, and with fuel added USPS is lower at every pound from 51 to 70 lb.
What is the USPS Ground Advantage weight limit?
70 lb, and USPS also caps combined length and girth at 130 inches. A parcel over 108 inches but not over 130 inches pays the oversized price for its zone whatever it weighs. UPS Ground takes packages up to 150 lb, so over 70 lb USPS drops out of the comparison.
What if I buy USPS postage at the Post Office counter?
USPS then charges its retail prices, which sit above its commercial prices, so for a shipper on UPS Daily Rates the crossing comes earlier. With UPS fuel added, UPS stays lower against the USPS retail list from 21 lb in zones 2 and 3, 20 lb in zone 4, 12 lb in zone 5, 10 lb in zone 6, 7 lb in zone 7 and 6 lb in zone 8, through 50 lb. A shipper with no UPS payment account or scheduled pickup is on UPS Retail Rates instead, where these weights do not hold. USPS says postage bought online with Click-N-Ship gets the lower commercial prices.
Do these crossings apply if I have a UPS contract or discount?
No. They use the published lists, and a UPS contract or UPS Small Business Rates sheet has its own prices and surcharge terms, which can move every crossing. Price the same box on your own rates before you decide.
