Switching from Stamps.com, step by step

One afternoon. No downtime.

Switch before your next Stamps.com billing date: a GoatLabels account is free to open, the wallet funds instantly, and Billy AI drafts your first labels the same day.

Six steps

The move off Stamps.com, in order.

The migration itself is short. What makes it feel risky is doing the steps in the wrong order — so the sequence below opens the new account first, proves it on a real parcel, and only cancels the old one once labels are already printing.

1

Find your renewal date first

Open your Stamps.com billing page and write down the day the next charge lands. Everything below is scheduled backwards from that date, because the only expensive way to migrate is to do it slowly enough to pay for one more month you never used.

2

Open a GoatLabels account and fund the wallet

Signing up is free and takes seconds, and the wallet accepts card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, ACH bank transfer, or crypto. Load only what your next few days of shipping needs — a prepaid balance is not a deposit, and it is not a plan you are now committed to.

3

Reconnect the stores, or skip that entirely

Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, and TikTok Shop sync into the To Ship queue and push tracking back when you print. If your orders come out of DMs instead, connect nothing: paste the message or drop the screenshot and Billy drafts the label from it.

4

Run one real parcel through both tools

Take the next order you were going to ship anyway, quote it here against USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL, and compare the all-in number with what you were about to buy. One parcel is a faster answer than a week of spreadsheet comparison.

5

Print the rest of the day's queue here

This is the whole migration. There is no data import, no CSV mapping, and no address book to move by hand — type or paste an address once and it is saved. Most sellers reach this step the same afternoon they started.

6

Cancel before the renewal date, not after

Follow Stamps.com's own cancellation process from their support pages, and do it with days to spare rather than hours — that is the single detail that decides whether this move costs you an extra billing cycle. Keep the account open until you have printed here for a couple of days if that makes you more comfortable; nothing on our side charges you for the overlap.

Stamps.com is a trademark of its owner and is not affiliated with GoatLabels. Their cancellation process and billing terms are theirs to change — follow the instructions on their own support pages.

What "no downtime" means on a switch like this.

Shipping migrations go wrong in one specific way: the old tool is off before the new one has printed anything real, and a day's orders sit in a box while somebody reads a help article. Nothing in this sequence requires that. Both accounts can be live at once, the prepaid wallet has no minimum making the overlap expensive, and there is no import job that has to finish before you can print. The hand-over is a decision you make after the first label comes out of the printer, not before.

And when Stamps.com is the right choice

  • You need a carrier or a specialised USPS service GoatLabels doesn't rate-shop — we quote USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL, and that is the honest list.
  • Your postage runs through leased hardware or a desktop client that your team is trained on and your process depends on.
  • You are mid-quarter with accounting built on Stamps.com reporting — finish the quarter, then move on a clean boundary.
Day one, after the switch

The same queue you ran yesterday. Minus the renewal date.

Once the account is open, the working day looks like the one you already know, with the parts that used to be manual taken over. Orders arrive from Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, or TikTok Shop, from the REST API, or as a pasted DM or screenshot, and land in one To Ship queue. Billy fills in the addresses, the package details, and the service, then hands the draft back for you to confirm. Every label is a debit against the prepaid wallet you funded with card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, ACH, or crypto, so the month after the switch costs exactly what you shipped and nothing more. Rate-shop USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL at the all-in price, print from your phone or a thermal printer, and let signed webhooks and idempotency keys carry the same events on the API side.

Connectors for the storefronts, AI for everything else.

Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, and TikTok Shop sync into To Ship and get tracking pushed back when you print, so the storefronts you had wired up are reconnected in the time it takes to authorise them. The orders that never had a connector are the easy part here: paste an Instagram or Facebook DM, or a screenshot of one, and Billy builds the label anyway.

Nothing to install on switch day

No desktop client, no setup afternoon.

Half the dread of moving shipping tools is the install-and-configure evening. There isn't one. The browser you are reading this in is the client, the phone in your pocket runs the same queue, and the first label can be printed before you have finished cancelling the old account.

Paste the DM, snap the thread, or drop the screenshot — Billy pulls the name, the address, and the parcel out of it.
No software to install and no address book to import: addresses save as you ship.
USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL come back as four all-in prices on one screen.

Hold the mic at the packing table and say the address — Billy drafts it and reads the rate back.
The fastest way to print label one

Talk to Billy, not to a setup wizard.

On switch day the question is how quickly a real parcel gets out the door. Hold the mic, say who it is going to, and Billy looks up the buyer, rate-shops USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL, and queues the label against your prepaid balance — then answers for it afterwards. That is a faster first label than any onboarding checklist. This is the real product, not a render.

Who this switch is easiest for

Not every Stamps.com user should move.

The migration is shortest for sellers whose shipping never really needed the desktop-and-plan model in the first place — spiky volume, off-platform orders, and small teams printing from a phone.

Switching from Stamps.com FAQ

How long does switching from Stamps.com actually take?
An afternoon for most sellers. Opening the account and funding the wallet is a few minutes, connecting Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, or TikTok Shop is a few more, and there is no data migration step because there is nothing to import — orders arrive from the connectors, the API, or a pasted message, and addresses save themselves as you use them.
When in the billing cycle should I switch?
Start a few days before your next renewal date rather than just after it. Open and fund the GoatLabels account first, print here for a day or two while the old account is still live, then cancel with time to spare. Moving in that order means the overlap costs nothing on our side and you never pay for a month you did not ship in.
Will I lose my saved addresses or shipping history?
Your Stamps.com history stays in Stamps.com — export anything your bookkeeping needs before you close the account, as you would with any provider. On this side there is no address book to import: addresses save as you ship, and Billy pulls them straight out of a pasted order or a screenshot.
Can I keep printing USPS exactly as I do now?
Yes, and you gain three more carriers alongside it. Every parcel is quoted against USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL at once as all-in prices, so the USPS service you print today is still there and now has three competitors on the same screen.
Do I have to cancel Stamps.com before I can start?
No, and you should not. Nothing here requires exclusivity and there is no monthly minimum making the overlap expensive, so run both for a day or two, confirm the labels and the rates look right, and only then cancel.
What happens to money left in my postage account?
That balance belongs to your old provider, so follow their process for it before you close the account. The GoatLabels wallet is separate and prepaid: you fund it with card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, ACH, or crypto, and voided labels credit straight back into it.
Is there a contract or a minimum on the new account?
No contract and no monthly minimum to print. Free covers 50 shipments a month with the API, the store connectors, and Billy unlimited underneath it; Pro is an optional flat plan for unlimited shipments and cheaper label pricing when volume makes that worthwhile.

Still weighing it up? Stamps.com vs free shipping software compares the fee against what free actually includes, and the billing friction people report covers why the timing of the cancellation matters. Developers should start with the API alternative.
