Voiding labels: Shippo refunds vs void-to-wallet

Credited back where you buy.

When you void an unused label on GoatLabels, the funds return to your prepaid wallet for immediate reuse, instead of waiting on a carrier refund cycle.

Four carriers quoted, one balance behind them

USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL — bought from the wallet, and credited back to it.

One balance Buy and credit in one place.
Quote = debit So void = exact credit.
Void via API One REST call.

Void it and the money is usable again now

No refund cycle to watch, no card statement to reconcile against.

Back to wallet Not back to a card.
Respendable Buys the next label.
Full amount No fee left stranded.
Side by side

A refund from Shippo versus a credit you can spend.

Both models return your money for a label you never used. The question that matters on a busy day is not whether the money comes back — it is where it lands, how long it is unusable, and whether anyone has to watch it get there.

  GoatLabels Shippo
Where the money goes back to Your prepaid wallet — the same balance every label is bought from. Back through the carrier's refund process to your billing method.
When you can spend it again Immediately. The credited balance buys the next label straight away. After the refund cycle completes — timing is the carrier's, not the software's.
What you have to chase Nothing. Void the shipment and the balance moves. A refund status you watch until it clears.
Effect on a reprint Void, redraft, rebuy — the funds never left your account, so nothing is float. You pay for the replacement label before the first one comes back.
Fee stranded by a void None — there is no per-label platform fee to strand in the first place. Depends on their current fee and refund terms — check their policy.
How refunds appear in the API A void call and a wallet balance you can read back over REST. Mature refund endpoints — this is a well-built part of their API.

Shippo is a trademark of its owner and is not affiliated with GoatLabels. Refund terms, timings, and fees change — read their current policy rather than a description on ours.

Three reasons void-to-wallet wins the day it matters.

Reusable beats refundable

A refund gives you your money back somewhere you cannot immediately use it. A wallet credit gives you the same money back exactly where the next label is bought from. For anyone printing again the same day, the second one is not a slower version of the first — it is a different thing entirely.

Prepaid means it never left

Because labels are bought from a balance you funded, voiding is an internal move rather than a reversal of a card charge. There is no external cycle to wait on, and nothing to reconcile between what you were billed and what came back.

Mistakes are cheap when credit is instant

Wrong weight, wrong service, buyer changed the address an hour later. These happen constantly and they should cost you a void and a redraft, not a week of watching a refund status while you pay twice.

And when Shippo is the right choice

  • You need a carrier GoatLabels doesn't rate-shop — we quote USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL, and that is the honest list.
  • You genuinely prefer money returning to a card or bank account rather than sitting as prepaid balance — that is a real accounting preference and a wallet does not suit it.
  • Your existing refund reconciliation is already built around Shippo's endpoints and works fine.
What a void actually does here

Buy from the balance. Void back to the same balance.

The reason a void is instant here is structural, not a feature bolted on. Labels are not charged to a card at the moment of purchase — they are debited from a prepaid wallet you topped up in advance with card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, ACH, or crypto. So voiding an unused label is a movement inside your own account rather than a reversal that has to travel back out through someone else's refund cycle. Orders reach the queue however they arrive: a store sync, a REST call, a pasted message, or a screenshot Billy reads into a draft. You confirm an all-in USPS, UPS, FedEx, or DHL quote, the exact amount leaves the balance, and if the parcel never goes out you void it and that exact amount is there again — ready to buy the corrected label a minute later instead of a week later.

Connectors for the storefronts, AI for everything else.

Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, and TikTok Shop sync into To Ship and push tracking back when you print — and when one of those orders is cancelled after you printed, the void credits the same wallet as everything else. Paste an Instagram or Facebook DM, or a screenshot of one, and Billy builds the label with no connector at all, on identical terms.

The wallet is why the void is instant.

Money that comes back where you spend it.
Not where you banked it.

Void-to-wallet is not a refund policy so much as a consequence of prepaid funding. Everything below sits on that same balance: the four carrier quotes, the AI drafting, the API, and the credit that lands back the moment a parcel does not go out.

One prepaid wallet,
five ways to fund it

Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, ACH bank transfer, and crypto all top up the same balance, and every method buys identical rates, carriers, and features. Because the balance is where labels are bought, it is also where a void returns them — no route out to a card and back again.

Most voids happen because something changed — a weight, a service, an address the buyer corrected an hour late. Billy takes the updated message or screenshot and drafts the replacement immediately, against credit that is already back in the balance.

No fee to strand

Because there is no per-label platform fee here, a voided label leaves nothing behind. The whole debited amount returns, so cancelling a shipment costs you the time to click void and nothing else.

Cancellations happen at the packing table

Void it from the phone before the parcel is taped.

The moment you learn a shipment is off is usually the moment you are holding it. Void from the phone, watch the credit land in the balance, redraft with the corrected details, and print the replacement without ever sitting down at a laptop.

Paste the DM, snap the thread, or drop the screenshot — Billy pulls the name, the address, and the parcel out of it.
No import mapping and no CSV step: the message is the order record.
USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL come back as four all-in prices on one screen.
Buy from the prepaid balance and one-tap print to a share sheet or a thermal printer over Wi-Fi.
Hold the mic at the packing table and say the address — Billy drafts it and reads the rate back.
Ask what came back

Talk to Billy instead of chasing a refund status.

Did that void go through, what is my balance, where is the replacement parcel — questions that a refund cycle makes you answer in two systems. Here they are one. Hold the mic and ask; Billy reads the balance and the tracking back, rate-shops USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL for the reprint, and queues it against the same wallet. This is the real product, not a render.

Who voids labels most

Cancellations are a workflow, not an exception.

Some sellers void a label a month and barely notice how refunds work. Others void several a week, and for them the difference between reusable credit and a pending refund is the whole argument.

Unused labels and refunds — FAQ

What happens when I void an unused label on GoatLabels?
The funds return to your prepaid wallet, which is the same balance every label is bought from, and they are available for the next label right away. There is no separate refund queue to watch and nothing to reconcile against a card statement.
How is that different from a Shippo refund?
A refund sends money back out through the carrier's refund process to whatever you paid with, on the carrier's timing. Void-to-wallet keeps the money inside the account it never really left, so it is respendable immediately. Both get you your money — the difference is how long it is unusable and whether you have to watch it.
Is there a fee for voiding a label?
No. And because there is no per-label platform fee here in the first place, a void does not strand a software charge behind it — the whole amount that was debited comes back to the balance.
Can I void through the API?
Yes. Voiding is a normal REST call with Bearer auth, and your wallet balance is readable back over the same API, so a system that buys labels programmatically can also unwind and re-buy them without a human checking a dashboard.
What if I need to reprint with a different weight or service?
Void the first label, let Billy redraft with the corrected details, rate-shop USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL again, and buy from the same balance. Because the credit is instant, you are never funding two labels for one parcel while you wait.
Can I withdraw wallet credit instead of respending it?
The wallet is designed for buying labels, so credit lands there for reuse rather than being pushed back to your card by default. If holding balance is the wrong shape for your bookkeeping, that is a fair reason to prefer a refund-to-source model — it is named on this page for that reason.
Does an unused label expire?
Carrier rules govern how long a purchased label stays valid, and those differ by carrier and service. The practical habit is the same either way: if a parcel is not going out, void it and put the balance back to work rather than leaving it sitting on a label nobody will scan.
