What does Shippo cost per month at your volume?
Shippo bills its web app and its API differently, so the table keeps them apart. The web app is free up to 30 labels a month, then moves to a Pro plan priced by label band. The API gives 30 labels a month free, then charges a fee on every label. GoatLabels is free up to 50 shipments a month and one flat Pro fee above that. Every figure is a software fee: postage is not included in any column.

Where Shippo costs the same or less: up to 30 labels a month both free plans cost nothing, and from 51 to 500 labels Shippo Pro's monthly fee is below GoatLabels Pro, lower still on annual billing. Through the API, Shippo's label fees stay below GoatLabels Pro's flat fee up to 601 labels a month. From 31 to 50 labels GoatLabels Free costs nothing while Shippo's web app needs Pro, and above those ranges GoatLabels Pro is the smaller software charge. GoatLabels keeps a small margin inside its all-in label price, so quote one real parcel in both before you decide.

Why is the per-label fee the whole decision?
A small number times a big number
Per-label pricing is designed to look trivial at the moment you read it, because you read it next to one label. Shippo's API fee is the clear case: a few cents next to one label, charged on every label after the first 30 each month. You do not pay it once. You pay it on every parcel you will ship this year, and the total is a straight line with your volume on the x-axis.
The fee grows exactly when you can least justify it
Success is the trigger, and on a per-label API fee it is literal. Double your orders and the platform charge doubles, though the software did not change and no extra work was done for you. GoatLabels Pro is one flat monthly fee whether you print five hundred labels or five thousand.
Compare all-in numbers, not rate cards
The only fair comparison is what actually leaves your account per parcel. Here the quote and the debit are one number: the rate-shopped carrier price, with no platform fee appended after you confirm.

The reason a per-label fee is easy to overlook is that it lands somewhere you are not looking — after the quote, on a statement, in a monthly total nobody itemises. This pipeline is built so there is nowhere for a charge to hide. An order arrives from a store sync, the REST API, a pasted DM, or a screenshot, and Billy fills the addresses, the package details, and the service before handing the draft back. You see an all-in quote from each carrier, you pick one, and exactly that amount leaves your prepaid wallet, topped up with card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, ACH, or crypto. There is no platform fee line and no reconciliation between what you were quoted and what you were charged, at a hundred labels a month or at two thousand.

- How do I calculate what Shippo costs me?
- Find your monthly label count in the table above. In the web app, the cost is the plan for that volume: Starter is free up to 30 labels a month, then a Pro plan priced by label band, with a per-label fee only on Starter labels bought through your own carrier account and on Pro labels beyond 10,000 a month. Through the API, the cost is the per-label fee on every label after the first 30 each month. Multiply the monthly figure by twelve for the year, and add postage separately in every case.
- Does GoatLabels charge a per-label fee?
- No. What leaves your prepaid wallet is the rate-shopped carrier price for that parcel, and that is the whole debit. The quote you approve on screen is the number that moves, with no platform fee applied afterwards.
- Then how does GoatLabels make money?
- Inside the label. We buy labels on our own carrier accounts and keep a small margin within the all-in rate you are quoted, instead of charging a separate fee per label or a monthly minimum. Free covers 50 shipments a month; past that, Pro is one flat $40 monthly plan with unlimited shipments.
- At what volume does the difference start to matter?
- It depends on which Shippo product you use. Against the web app, both cost nothing in plan fees up to 30 labels a month, GoatLabels Free stays free up to 50, Shippo Pro has the lower plan fee from 51 to 500 labels, and GoatLabels Pro's flat fee is lower above that. Against the API, Shippo's per-label fees stay below GoatLabels Pro's flat fee up to 601 labels a month and pass it above that. Label prices differ between the two as well, so price one real parcel in both before you decide.
- Does Pro change the label price?
- No. Free and Pro pay the same all-in label price. Pro is a flat $40 a month for unlimited shipments, and API access stays free and unlimited on it. That is the opposite direction of travel from a fee that grows with every parcel.
- Is rate shopping limited on the free plan?
- No. USPS, UPS and FedEx are quoted side by side on every domestic parcel, and DHL on international lanes, on every plan, including Free. Rate shopping is how you get the carrier price down, so putting it behind a tier would defeat the point.
- What if I buy a label and never use it?
- Void it and, after the carrier accepts the void, the funds return to your prepaid wallet for the next label. A voided label does not leave a fee stranded behind it.
