What to do about a ShipStation price increase

Negotiate, downgrade, or drop the subscription.

When ShipStation raises your plan price, the cleanest exit is a platform with no subscription at all: GoatLabels charges only rate-shopped carrier prices from a prepaid wallet.

The same carriers you ship with today

USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL — live all-in rates, and no plan fee sitting underneath them.

Prepaid Spent label by label.
No renewal Nothing to be raised.
Voids credited Back to the balance.
Your three options

Pay it, argue it, or remove the line entirely.

Before deciding, do one piece of homework: list the features you actually opened last month. A price increase on something you use every day is just a price. A price increase on a suite you use as a label printer is a signal you are buying the wrong shape of product.

  GoatLabels Staying on ShipStation
Option 1 — pay the new price Not applicable: there is no plan price to raise. Simplest, and correct if you use the warehouse and automation depth you are paying for.
Option 2 — negotiate or downgrade Nothing to negotiate. Free covers 50 shipments a month; Pro is optional and flat. Ask about annual terms or a lower tier — and check which features the lower tier removes.
Option 3 — leave for no subscription Fund a wallet, pay only carrier rates, ship nothing in a quiet month and pay nothing. Ends the recurring line, at the cost of the features you genuinely used.
What a quiet month costs Zero. An unspent balance is still your money. The plan fee, regardless of volume.
Carriers after the move USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL rate-shopped on every parcel at all-in prices. Broad carrier list — see their site for current coverage.
What you keep either way Store connectors, batch labels, a full REST API, and AI drafting on the free tier. Deeper warehouse tooling and configurable automation rules.

ShipStation is a trademark of its owner and is not affiliated with GoatLabels. We do not publish their prices or the size of any increase — check your renewal notice and their current pricing page.

Three things worth doing before you click renew.

A price increase is a re-evaluation prompt, not an emergency

The renewal email is the first time in a year most sellers actually price their shipping stack. Before you accept or cancel, work out which features you touched last month. If the answer is rate-shop, buy, print, track, you are renewing a suite to use a utility.

The cleanest exit is no subscription at all

Downgrading a tier trades money for features and leaves you exposed to the next increase. Moving to per-label pricing removes the recurring line entirely: you fund a wallet, labels debit it, and there is no renewal date to be surprised by next year.

Migrating is a week of overlap, not a project

Print your next order in GoatLabels and compare the all-in rate against the quote you would have bought. Nothing has to be torn out first, and because nothing here has a monthly minimum, running both in parallel costs only the labels you actually print.

And when ShipStation is the right choice

  • You need a carrier GoatLabels does not rate-shop — we quote USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL, and that is the honest list.
  • You use ShipStation's warehouse depth — multi-warehouse inventory, pick-and-pack, and the roles built around it. A price rise on something you use daily is just a price.
  • Your renewal is months out and nothing is urgent. Set a reminder and re-read this page a week before the date, not now.
What the week of overlap looks like

Keep shipping while you decide. The overlap costs only the labels you print.

You do not have to cancel anything to evaluate the alternative, and you should not. Create an account, fund the wallet with card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, ACH, or crypto, and route real orders through it for a week: connect the store, upload a CSV, call the API, or just paste the order and let Billy draft the label. Compare each all-in USPS, UPS, FedEx, or DHL rate against the quote you would have bought elsewhere, and watch what the total looks like with no plan fee sitting on top. Then cancel — or renew, having actually checked.

The nervous part of leaving a paid tool is the feature you forgot you relied on. Here is the list, so you can check it against the reasons you first signed up: four carriers, batch labels, store connectors, a full REST API, and AI drafting — all on the free tier.

The automation rules you built over years do not port between platforms, which is a real switching cost. Billy removes the object rather than porting it: paste, screenshot, or dictate the order and the label comes back drafted, with no conditions to rebuild.

Cheaper is not the only reason people leave

A price rise is often the excuse, not the reason.

Most sellers who move at renewal were already frustrated by something else: a desktop-shaped workflow, a rule set nobody remembers configuring, an order in a DM that has no field to go in. The price increase just made it worth doing something about.

Paste the DM, snap the thread, or drop the screenshot — Billy pulls the name, the address, and the parcel out of it.
No import mapping and no CSV step required: the message is the order record.
USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL come back as four all-in prices on one screen.
Buy from the prepaid balance and one-tap print to a share sheet or a thermal printer over Wi-Fi.
Hold the mic at the packing table and say the address — Billy drafts it and reads the rate back.
Nothing to configure on day one

Talk to Billy from the first order.

Migrations usually start with a setup weekend. This one starts with a sentence: hold the mic, say who the parcel is going to, and Billy looks up the buyer, rate-shops USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL, and queues the label against your prepaid balance — then answers for it afterwards. This is the real product, not a render.

All-in quotes

The quote is the whole bill.

Several carriers on the same parcel, each an all-in number that is the exact amount leaving your prepaid balance. With no plan fee underneath, the label price is the entire cost of shipping that parcel — which makes comparing this month against your last invoice a matter of addition rather than guesswork.

ShipStation price increase FAQ

ShipStation raised my price — can I negotiate it?
It is worth asking, and worth asking in writing. Annual commitments, lower tiers, and volume terms are all normal levers with subscription software. What a negotiation cannot do is remove the renewal from next year's calendar, which is why some sellers use the moment to move to per-label pricing instead.
What is the alternative to paying the increase?
Three things, in rising order of change: negotiate or move to a cheaper tier and accept the features it removes; downgrade to a lighter tool and keep a subscription; or move to a platform with no subscription at all, where you fund a prepaid wallet and pay carrier rates per label. GoatLabels is the third.
Will I lose carriers if I move?
GoatLabels rate-shops USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL on every parcel at live all-in rates. That is the honest list — it covers most domestic and international small-parcel shipping, but if your operation depends on a carrier outside it, that is a genuine reason to stay where you are.
What about my store connections and my API integration?
Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, and TikTok Shop sync into the To Ship queue and push tracking back when you print. The REST API is free and unlimited on every plan, so an integration you built once does not need a subscription tier to keep working.
Is GoatLabels going to raise its price on me later?
There is no plan price to raise on the free tier — the business makes a small amount on each label instead of charging monthly. Pro exists as a flat optional plan for unlimited shipments and cheaper label pricing, and it is never required to print a label.
How long does switching actually take?
Creating an account and funding a wallet takes minutes. The realistic timeline is a week of running both side by side: print real orders in the new tool, compare the all-in rates, connect the stores that matter, and cancel only once you are satisfied. Nothing forces the two to be sequential.
What happens to money left in my wallet if I stop shipping?
It stays in the balance until you spend it, and a voided label credits back to the same balance. That is the structural difference from a subscription: unspent money is still yours rather than a month you paid for and did not use.

Want the full head-to-head first? Read GoatLabels vs ShipStation or ShipStation vs free shipping software. Developers should check the API alternative page, and label pricing works like this.
